Started in July 1999, The Cheese Factory is a landmark cheese maker in Edmonton, Alberta. The idea of building a small, local, cheese plant had been up in the air since Mario Michel moved to Edmonton from his small hometown of Victoriaville, Quebec to start a contracting business. A cheese lover, Mario could not leave the cheese curds of his hometown behind and began shipping cheese from Quebec to Edmonton. With his business partner, Jean Guy Bergeron, Mario decided to build a cheese plant up from scratch to provide fresh cheese curds to the Edmonton French community.

At first, The Cheese Factory produced only cheese curds, which were sold at the factory and made into poutine for its adjoining restaurant. Windows between the plant and restaurant gave diners the unique opportunity to view the cheese making process while enjoying the poutine.

In 2000, master cheese-maker Brano Stanisic took on the role of The Cheese Factory’s manager and expanded the assortment of cheeses produced by the plant. Gouda, Havarti, Mozzarella, Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Feta, and others flew off the shelves. In 2002, Mario and Brano became partners and began experimenting with unique products such as handmade Beer Cheese and Prosciutto rolls.

Today, The Cheese Factory is famous for its daily made squeaky cheese curds, kajmak (Feta-based cream cheese), natural kefir (European style buttermilk), Beer Cheese, and others.

It has already served the Edmonton community for more than 15 years and continues to create unique and high quality cheese products for customers to enjoy.
