We began Aven-Hill Pottery in 1984, several years after we graduated from Alberta College of Art. Our first studio was on a farm near Grande Prairie on a hill. In the spring prairie avens bloomed in abundance hence our name.
After relocationg to Edmonton, building a new studio and retailing across the province for many years, Aven-Hill Pottery eventually arrived at the Old Strathcona Farmers' Market in 2000, where we have been delighted to meet many of the people who use our pottery.
Upholding the craftsman philosophy of quality workmanship and good design in everyday things, we create a wide variety of table and domestic ware. Simple objects to enhance the rituals of everyday life. Using a piece of pottery is a very tangible experience. We address many elements in the making of a piece: the size, weight, colour, shape and curve of a handle, all considerations to acheive a balance and bring enjoyment to the user.
Our durable and functional pottery is handcrafted from a high temperature stoneware clay fired in our kiln to 1250 degree celsius. Our glazes are lead-free and the pieces we make are ideal to use in the oven, microwave and can be cleaned in a dishwasher.
Working in clay today is just as exciting as when we began over 40 years ago.
